After 12 beta versions and two release candidate updates, Mozilla finally released Firefox 4 on March 22, 2011. It quickly outpaced the first-day downloads of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9. According to Computerworld’s Gregg Keizer, Firefox 4 was downloaded close to seven million times on its launch date.
A New, Simpler Interface
The first major change that’s apparent upon launching Firefox 4 is the drastic change in its visual appearance. Mozilla has given the browser a remake that draws on elements of two of its major competitors, Google Chrome and Opera, to produce a simpler, more streamlined look.
As in Chrome, tabs are now displayed above the address bar rather than underneath, and the buttons are organized in a different fashion as well. The refresh and stop functions have been combined into a single button at the right hand edge of the address bar, while the Home button has gravitated to the right of the search bar (where the Feedback menu button was located in the beta versions).
