Choosing a web browser has become more and more of a challenge in recent years. While Internet Explorer still comes as part of every version of Windows, and has improved considerably in its last two versions, it hasn’t been the browser of choice for power users for a long time.
Mozilla’s open-source Firefox is its strongest competitor, but it’s become more of a memory hog with each recent release version (though Firefox 4, currently in its ninth beta version, may well change that). The need for a speedier browser has led many users to turn to Google’s Chrome, whose reputation is all about speed.
Google Chrome's separate processes for tabs increase stability but not efficient memory usage
Google Chrome takes a different approach to memory usage than IE or Firefox. Each tab in Chrome is treated as a separate process, so if one crashes, the browser itself remains stable. Since crashes have been a major problem with Firefox 3.6, this alone makes Chrome worth investigating. However, it also makes comparisons of Chrome’s actual memory usage with Firefox more difficult.
