Retail employees are quick to spot out potential thieves. They make their judgments based on an individual’s apparel, physical grooming, posture, and facial expressions. When an individual with a heavy brow and severe frown walks into the store, the employees quickly become more alert in his presence, watching for loose fingers. This can be aggravating for someone looking for a trinket as recompense after a long and emotionally distressing day. For the day likely generated negative facial expressions, and the last act the employee should accuse the man of on such a day is thievery.
First Impressions, Determining Potential Threats or Dangers
Studies show people can almost instantaneously spot a threatening individual, such as someone with an angry expression. Specifically, they can make the judgment call within a few dozen milliseconds. When given the opportunity to observe the threatening individual for a longer period, they will likely conclude the same results.
However, facial expressions classified as threatening may appear more natural, or neutral, on further observation. People may perceive the individual as threatening on first glance due to deep impressions, the results of frequent negative facial expressions in the past.
